It has just emerged that Michelle Heaton of Liberty X fame is to undergo preventative surgery against both breast cancer and ovarian cancer, as she is a carrier of the BRCA2 gene, which means that she has an 80 per cent chance of developing breast cancer, and a 30 per cent chance of developing ovarian cancer. She therefore intends to have a double mastectomy and also have her ovaries removed in the future to decrease her risk.
Her story echoes that of our own incredible author, Emma Hannigan, who has battled breast cancer more than 7 times after discovering she is a carrier of the BRCA1 gene – and has herself undergone a double mastectomy as well as a hysterectomy, to reduce her risk level for the future. Her book is an absolute inspiration – despite all that she has been through, Emma's infectious sense of humour shines through her writing. She finds laughter and positivity in everything, and is the most optimistic voice on cancer you will find. You can read her incredible story in Talk to the Headscarf.
Talk to the Headscarf is available to buy now from all good bookshops. It is also available to download as an e-book from all the major e-book retailers, so you can read it on your Kindle, iPad, Kobo or Sony Reader.
