Piatkus author Darynda Jones has always been very generous with her time on the Piatkus blog,. We were thrilled when she said she would write a little something about her new novel Fourth Grave Beneath My Feet. As a new reader, what can you expect from the latest Charley Davidson adventure? And for those of us who are on tenter hooks, what can we look forward to?
If one were to ask the average person to describe the grim reaper, curvy private investigator with more sass than she knows what to do with probably would not come to mind. But that is exactly how most readers of the Charley Davidson series would describe her. Only they might add a few more adjectives like flirtatious, brazen and smart mouthed with an ever-so-slight penchant for getting herself into life-threatening situations. And in Fourth Grave Beneath My Feet, nothing has changed.
Since Charley’s last case went so awry, she took a couple months off to wallow in the wonders of self-pity. But when a woman shows up on her doorstep convinced someone is trying to kill her, Charley has to force herself to rise above. Or at least get dressed. She quickly realizes something is amiss when everyone the woman knows swears she’s insane. The more they refute the woman’s story, the more Charley believes it.
In the meantime, the sexy, sultry son of Satan, Reyes Farrow, has been cleared of all charges. He is out of prison and out of Charley’s life, as per her wishes and several perfectly timed death threats. But his absence has put a serious crimp in her sex life. While there are other things to consider, like the fact that Albuquerque has been taken hostage by an arsonist, Charley is having a difficult time staying away. Especially when it looks like Reyes may be involved. Just when life was returning to normal, Charley is thrust back into the world of crime, punishment, and the devil in blue jeans.
So being the grim reaper isn’t all bad. It definitely has its perks, like the occasional ability to slow time or the ever-popular ability to feel when someone is lying to you. Sure, wires get crossed every now and then, and sometimes Charley’s closest friends pay the price, but what’s life without a few bumps and bruises along the way? They build character. At least, that’s what she is trying to convince herself. But it’s one thing for Charley to pay the price for her heritage. It’s a whole other ballgame when her friends get pulled under along the way. Will Charley learn to cope with such a steep price for her abilities, or will she give up entirely?
That’s for Charley to know and you to find out in Fourth Grave Beneath My Feet, out now from Piatkus Fiction!
